WE ARE BACK!!!

ELEPHANTSTONES GALLERY RE-OPENS TO THE PUBLIC!

Elephantstones-new-we-are-back-large.jpg

HOORAY!

It’s been a little while… but from the 15th of June, we will be re-opening to the public.

Things will obviously be a little different. So we thought we would let you know what to expect when you visit us…

!!DONT FORGET!!
From the
24th of July by law, you MUST wear a face covering when inside the gallery. Make sure you’ve got one in your pocket :)

ONE FAMILY GROUP AT A TIME

As we are only a small gallery, we will only allow one family group to enter the gallery at a time - that’s people who are in a household together, not you and a friend from another household! :)

YOU MUST MAINTAIN 2 METRE SOCAL DISTANCING

The two metre social distancing rules must be upheld when inside the gallery and waiting or queuing outside the gallery. We have roped-off areas of the gallery that visitors cannot enter to allow gallery staff to keep 2 metres from visitors.

SANITISE HANDS ON ENTRY

You must sanitise your hands upon entering the gallery. There are two hand sanitising stations - one by the door for sanitisation on entry and one by the till.

CONTACTLESS PAYMENTS ONLY

For safe payment, we ask that where possible, purchases are paid for by card. There is no minimum amount for card payments so even small purchases can be made!

CLEANING AND STAFF COVID-19 PROTOCOL

Gallery staff will be wearing face masks and sanitising hands, surfaces and payment consoles between customers. Where payment is taken, we have a sneeze screen to keep both the customer and our staff safe.

FEELING UNWELL? DO NOT VISIT THE GALLERY.

Only visit the gallery if you have no symptoms and have not been exposed to someone that has a cough, fever, or shortness of breath.

If you have any of the above symptoms, please protect yourself and others and go home/stay at home and access the 111 online Coronavirus service.

London Lights Up Again, Harry Ousey (1915-1985)

Harry Ousey (1915-1985) has had a home at Elephantstones Gallery for sometime now. We love sharing his remarkable story and art, working with Sue Astles, Harry’s niece, to bring Harry’s work back into Hayfield Village and beyond!

With the 75th anniversary of V.E Day approaching, we would like to share this note from Sue on one of Harry’s early works in response to the end of the Second World War, 75 years on.

The musings of Sue Astles, Ousey’s niece, on Harry’s experience of V.E day 75 Years ago:

ousey-presentation_page_006b.jpg

“As the United Kingdom celebrates V.E. Day on the 8th May, Harry has been in my thoughts.  Would he and my Aunt Susie have joined in the dancing and singing in Trafalgar Square on that wonderful, life changing day? I would love to think so.

Bombardier Frederick Henry Ousey joined the Royal Artillery in 1939 and spent the latter part of the Second World War at London’s Woolwich Barracks. Harry and Susie had married in February 1942 and moved from Manchester to Catford in London’s dockland -  “A tiny flat with holes in the walls, only cold water, windows missing”.

Ousey-London-Lights-Up-Backing.jpg

Earlier drawings and possessions had been destroyed during an air raid but, he was able to create this powerful image looking towards St. Paul’s Cathedral as “lights began to appear in the streets again lighting shapes we had not seen before, and some familiar places were gone for ever”.

“We too were not without our scars”.

The oil on board was exhibited at Salford Art Gallery as part of the Harry Ousey Centenary exhibition “One Needs More Than Paint” and  “A Sense of Place” at Stockport Art Gallery in 2018.”

- Sue Astles

May 2020

Although the gallery is closed to the public for now, there is still plenty to explore and read about Harry and his works online.

Visit www.harryousey.co.uk to see more of Harry’s work, or click here to read about Harry’s story at the gallery.
