DERBYSHIRE OPEN ARTS 2022 AT ELEPHANTSTONES!

THE EXHIBITION

We are delighted that Derbyshire Open Arts is back! After a break due to COVID-19, the special arts weekend is up and running again and it’s certainly not one to miss!

Across the whole of Derbyshire, 217 artists are exhibiting their work at 62 venues putting on special exhibitions or welcoming you into their own studios for this special event. It’s been a very busy weekend in years past, so we look forward to an action packed few days!

The special exhibition will run on Saturday 28th & Sunday 29th of May 10am - 5pm!

If you come along to the gallery you'll find a selection of brand new photography and illustration for you to enjoy!  All the works will be for sale so if you’re in the market for some local landscapes, make sure you come and take a look!

PREVIEW EVENING

With the continuing crisis in Ukraine, we have decided that this year we will not be holding a preview night at the gallery for the exhibition. We will be giving the money we would have spent on drinks and nibbles to the Emergency Disaster Fund. It feels like the right thing to do at such a difficult time!

We will also have some prints for sale at the gallery with 100% of the proceeds going to the appeal - so come and grab a lovely piece of art knowing you’ve given some money to an extremely important cause.

THE HAYFIELD ARTS TRAIL

The Hayfield village Derbyshire Open Arts trail is perfect for art lovers. There are 5 locations in Hayfield bursting with local art by local artists. Download a copy of the map here so you can follow the trail and visit everyone taking part in the event. We will have printed copies of the map available at the gallery over the weekend, so be sure to stop by and collect one!

From sculpture to jewellery, there is something for everyone to enjoy! You’ll find artists exhibiting their work at these locations around Hayfield:

  • Elephantstones Gallery - Derbyshire Open Arts Venue 6 (Us! :) )

  • The Loft - Derbyshire Open Arts Venue 8

  • Ashlar Studio - Derbyshire Open Arts Venue 5

  • Henry Walsh

  • The Thread Mill - Derbyshire Open Arts Venue 7

Who is exhibiting at Elephantstones gallery?

Simon Bridges - Photographer

September Song Exhibition:

An evening stroll on September the 7th 2021 with a camera in tow. From 20 trees to the shooting cabin and back. Blue sky and low sun at 17:52 through to fiery sunset at 19.39. Thirteen images with times spread over an hour and threequartersish.

A bit about Simon…

Simon captures photographic images of landscapes in broad vista and textural detail. Simon has little interest in photographic technology and focuses more on composition and mood.

His career began as a commercial photographer, covering product pack shots, fashion, architecture, right through to album covers for bands. He now runs a creative and marketing consultancy business and, since taking an office in Hayfield, the draw of capturing images of the local area led to the opening of Elephantstones Gallery.

Since opening Elephantstones and meeting Harry Ousey’s niece, Sue Astles, Simon has curated and hung two retrospective exhibitions of Harry Ousey’s abstract landscapes alongside his daughter Eve. First at Stockport War Memorial Art Gallery in 2018 followed by the Cooper Gallery in 2021.

Eve Lumai Bridges - Illustrator

Floral Landscapes Exhibition:

Painterly brush marks, delicate patterns of nature and detailed textures. Using a mixed media approach, Eve’s new series of digital landscape works focus on the beauty of Hayfield vistas and the intricate details of the nature that fills it.

A bit about Eve…

Eve uses a mixture or sparing linework, found photography, gestural brush marks and texture to create her digital landscape works. Eve will also be showcasing a selection of her personal work at the gallery specially for the weekend!

Eve has recently completed a Masters in Illustration with Distinction from Manchester School of Art where she also achieved a 1st class degree. In 2021, Eve was selected to become an associate member of the Manchester Academy of Fine Arts after being a graduate member of the academy for three years after being awarded the MAFA Graduate Award at her Manchester School of Art BA degree show.

Eve has exhibited works in the Royal Academy of Arts Summer Exhibition and also had her work chosen for film director Danny Boyle’s launch of the School of Digital Arts in Manchester.

A little bit about the gallery…

Nestled at the bottom of Kinder Scout in the village of Hayfield, Elephanstones Gallery is home to local landscape art created by photographer Simon Bridges and illustrator Eve Lumai Bridges (Simon’s daughter). The gallery is also home to a collection of Scandinavian vintage objet (just because we love them!), Japanese homewares (also because we love them!) and ethically sourced, handmade gifts, candles and homewares.

The gallery is now online! You can now shop everything Elephantstones from the comfort of your sofa, garden or office… wherever you fancy! Visit our website to browse everything we have to offer.

Harry Ousey - Abstract Painter

The gallery is also home to a permanent exhibit of original works by abstract landscape artist Harry Ousey (1915-1985), who lived in the village for a short time in 1947. Ousey’s body of work is considered significant in forging a new direction for post-war British Abstract Art, well worth a visit to see!

We have a collection of Harry's work at the gallery which will also be displayed during the event. Call in and see the original works which are also for sale!
